Aura woke with a splitting headache and fire burning under her skin. She cracked swollen eyes open with a groan. Her eyes burned at the light assaulting her corneas although it was nearly twilight and the interior of the room remained dim.

It was difficult to know how much time had passed, memories flitted through her mind but were gone too quickly for accurate recollections. Her body ached as if she’d been running for miles and then hit a brick wall.

For a disoriented moment, she thought herself back in the Forbidden Zone and waking to see Castor for the first time after he laid her out on the furs. But as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, it became clear that this dwelling was substantially different from the one he had taken her to after finding her in the forest. And there were no crazed men outside waiting to tear her apart, at least not yet.

Then reality came crashing back on her like a ton of bricks. Memories crystallized as she remembered the horrible examination by the doctor while Faseer eagerly watched and the medication they had given her so she went out of her mind. And just when she thought the worst would happen, rescue had arrived.

Castor.

As if simply thinking his name were enough to draw attention, the figure she hadn’t noticed in the corner of the room rose on its haunches. He shifted forward and a beam of light illuminated his expressionless face.

A dozen different things flitted through her mind and were discarded as their eyes locked. His gaze shifted to her bare chest, and it was only then that Aura realized she was nude. She pulled the thin blanket up to cover herself as she stared down at her lap. He continued to watch her silently, making it clear that he expected her to speak first.

“Where are we?” she asked finally.

“Vigil, near the border.” His body remained unnaturally still, as if every muscle was tensed. “We have to hide here until Legion and Adrian return.”

Her fingers picked at a loose thread on the sheet as she forced herself to look at him. The piercing gaze that met her own sent a painful sensation shooting through her chest. “How did you find me?”

“With the help of the man who hid you away from me in the first place.” Castor’s tone was sardonic although there was no hint of emotion on his face which was still a neutral mask. “Adrian would hang from the judicial square by his neck if I hadn’t needed his help.”

The thought of Adrian coming to harm didn’t sit well, particularly after everything he had done for her. She might never fully understand what impulse inspired the taciturn man to aid her escape from the palace, but she still felt responsible for the consequences. “It isn’t his fault.”

“No,” Castor agreed. “It’s yours.”

Aura’s eyes narrowed as the same frustration he always inspired in her bubbled back up to the surface. It was impossible to understand how she could want someone so much but also feel a constant need to punch him in the throat.
